Thanks to the initiative of Mr. John Kadz, President of the CMC-Alberta Chapter, in collaboration with Mrs. Carmen Picard, Executive Director of the Canadian Music Competition, the “Gathering with the Stars CMC ” was launched in 2024. Inspired by the critical need to maintain stimulating educational activities for young Canadian musicians during the competition’s hiatus in 2024, this event was revived from July 2nd to 5th, 2025, at the School of Music of the University of Sherbrooke (Quebec). Recommended by the presidents of the various Canadian CMC chapters, participants are invited to meet a team of renowned professors and musicians to refine their instrumental technique and broaden their musical horizons in a relaxed atmosphere of exchange and sharing.
Thus, our 25 national finalists in strings and piano joined renowned professors for private lessons, masterclasses, and faculty and student concerts. The University of Sherbrooke’s School of Music hosted our distinguished professors: Marilyn Engle (piano, University of Calgary, AB), David Moroz (piano, University of Manitoba), Henry Kramer (piano, University of Montreal, QC), John Kadz (renowned cellist and pedagogue), Arnold Choi (principal cello, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra), Gwen Hoebig (principal violin, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), William von der Sloot (violin, Mount Royal University Calgary), and Wilhelm Magner (viola, University of Texas, USA).
In addition, Olivier Pérot (luthier) and Shirley Khouri (posture and pain management specialist) provided our participants and professors with their invaluable guidance.
This stay ended with a concert at the Serge Garant Hall of the University of Sherbrooke; the captivating performances of our young participants won over an enthusiastic audience!
